During the height of the global COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most pressing concerns for individuals was differentiating between the flu and COVID, as both share similar symptoms. This uncertainty prevented people from taking the next step, on whether or not they should be isolated. As the holiday season approaches, there’s good news: at-home test kits are now available, which will help you determine whether you’re dealing with the flu or COVID, without the need for an urgent visit to the doctor.

Though flu and COVID have similar symptoms, the viruses that cause the illness are different. The health concerns both raise also vary. These readily available at-home tests can now help you distinguish between two viruses.
The at-home tests are now available in stores and online, there is no need for a prescription. There are some at-home kits with a 3-in-1 version, capable of detecting COVID-19, influenza A, and influenza B. Getting a couple of them ahead of the holiday season will cut off the urgent visit to your doctor. Similar to at-home COVID tests, these require a nasal swab. The results take 15-30 minutes, depending on the test.
Dr. Greg Martin of Emory University told Fox 10, about how the tests can help, as once you know the cause of your illness, you can take the appropriate next steps, like contacting your doctor for treatment options. He also added that as both COVID-19 and flu have antiviral treatments, it works best when started early.
In February 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted the first emergency use authorization for one of these tests, Lucira’s. Many other brands have followed suit, and just last month, the FDA also authorized Healgen’s combination test.

COVID-19 can cause more severe illness compared to the flu in some people. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people infected with COVID may take longer time to exhibit symptoms and are contagious for a longer period of time, compared to those who have flu. However, to confirm whether it’s flu or COVID-19, testing is required.

Flu and COVID-19 share symptoms such as:
